In Japan, mystery bags or 'fukubukuro' (福袋) are sold over the new year shopping season. Reports say it originally began as a way for retailers to get rid of unwanted stock for the new year but today, the bags are often filled with premium goods and sold at a significantly lower price than if you bought all the items individually. But in the end, it's also just the excitement of not knowing what's inside them!
